About Me
I was born and raised on the family farm near Lafleche, Saskatchewan. Dad was a farmer and community leader, mom was a teacher and farm wife extraordinaire. Five siblings. Graduated from Lafleche Central High School in 1972, Bachelor of Arts from the University of Regina in 1976 and Law Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1979.

Started out in 1982 with a general small-town law practice in Stettler, Alberta doing a bit of everything: real estate, corporate, matrimonial, wills and estates, surface rights, personal injury, as well as criminal law. Moved to Red Deer in the early 1990s and have been doing more and more criminal defence work ever since. Criminal defence work has always been my passion, I think because it can be a way for one person to make a difference to the way things work in our society, as well as help people in trouble along the way. Acting as defence counsel has also allowed me to be a bit of a thorn in the side of “the establishment” which has always appealed to me. I have never acted as a prosecutor and never will (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
I’m willing and able to defend those who find themselves charged with criminal, quasi-criminal, or regulatory offences under the Criminal Code, the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, the Traffic Safety Act, and many other statutes.
You can find me at work in the Court of King’s Bench in Red Deer, Alberta, and in the Courts of Justice in Red Deer, Stettler, Rocky Mountain House, Rimbey, Ponoka, Didsbury, Coronation, Drumheller, Wetaskiwin, and elsewhere in Alberta. I don’t really like going to Calgary or Edmonton, but from time-to-time, I have been persuaded to do so. “Have Criminal Code, Will Travel!"
When not in court defending the innocent, I can often be found in a field, chasing a little white ball with a stick, as Rory McIlroy says. In the words of writer John Updike: "Golf's ultimate moral instruction directs us to find within ourselves a pivotal center of enjoyment: Relax into a rhythm that fits the hills and swales, and play the shot at hand - not the last one, or the next one, but the one at your feet, in the poison ivy, where you put it." Golf is hard, "full of wild and self-punishing imperfection". It's not for everyone, but there are many who love it, and I am one of them.
